HOW AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS WORK
What is a Air Source Heat Pump?
An air source heat pump is a renewable heating system that uses electricity to extract warmth from outside air, supplying heat and hot water.
Even in cold weather, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air and turns into a gas at temperatures below -50°C.
Through compression, the gas heats up and transfers warmth to your central heating system.
They provide heating and hot water using energy from the air or ground. They generate. more energy than it consumes, and you could be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, offering a £7,500 grant.
IS AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP RIGHT FOR YOUR HOME?
Air source heat pumps work well in a range of properties, both urban and rural. They’re ideal if:
Sustainability
You want a sustainable, eco-friendly heating system
Energy Efficient Homes
Your home is well-insulated for optimal efficiency and low running costs
Compact Design
You have limited space for a ground source pump—ASHPs need only a small, unobstructed area on an exterior wall
Underfloor Heating
You’re using or plan to install underfloor heating, which pairs well with ASHPs for efficient low-temperature heating
WHY US:
At AME Services, as Accredited Heat Pump Installers, we supply and install heat pumps across the UK.
BENEFITS OF AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP:
Investing in a heat pump entails significant costs and requires careful consideration of various factors before making your purchase decision.
Low-Carbon & Environmentally Friendly
Sustainable heating choice
High Efficiency
Typically outputs up to three times the energy it consumes
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Eligible for government grants
Space-Saving
Requires minimal outdoor space, making it suitable for urban homes
MAINTENANCE & SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
To keep your air source heat pump performing at its best, an annual professional service is essential.
Our qualified engineers inspect, clean, and address any potential issues to ensure efficiency and maintain your warranty.
Basic maintenance includes checking filters, clearing debris from the fan, and keeping the area around the pump unobstructed.
COULD YOU BE ELIGIBLE FOR A FREE HEAT PUMP?
In December 2024 a new MCS design guide was launched, the major change to this standard was the inclusion of hybrid heat pumps.
WHAT IS A HYBRID?
A hybrid heat pump is a combination of a boiler fuelled by gas, oil, LPG or direct electric working with a heat pump in the same hydraulic circuit.
In almost every instance a hybrid heat pump system is not installed in one go.
It's more normal for a fossil fuel system to be in place and a heat pump added to it later to make it greener.
THE BUS GRANT:
As of today, no detail about the changes to the BUS grant have been released but it is likely that a grant of between £2000 and £5,000 will be available to have a hybrid heat pump installed from April 2025.
The bus grant details are here:
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/environmental-and-social-schemes/boiler-upgrade-scheme-bus/installers
SO WILL YOU BE ELIGIBLE FOR A FREE HEAT PUMP ONCE THE GRANT IS RELEASED?
Do you have a combi boiler?
Do you have a big and old house?
Do you have inadequate power supplies to install a heat pump?
Are you unsure on heat pumps so would like to keep your old boiler?
Would you like to reduce the carbon footprint of your heating by supplementing it with a renewable heating system using a heat pump?
If you are any of the above please drop us an email at [email protected] and we can arrange a survey to see if you may be eligible.
